Directgov is the official government website for citizens. This site aims to provide easy access to the public services and government information. The site contains a useful overview of the UK system of government which also provides links to information about legislation, the legislative process and an index to government departments and agencies.

JUDICIAL

Her Majesty’s Court Service is responsible for delivery of justice in England and Wales and also provides information and guidance on Court related matters.

The Scottish Court Service is responsible for the administration of courts in Scotland.

The Northern Ireland Court Service is responsible for the administration of courts in Northern Ireland.

The Tribunals Service is the common administrative service for most tribunals in the UK.

LEGISLATION & THE LEGISLATIVE PROCESS

The National Archives is the official archive for England, Wales and the central UK government. Catalogue Research Guides provide information on records held including Legislation.

The Office of Public Sector Information is responsible for the publication of legislation and the management of Crown copyright. It also provides access to a wide range of legislation including “as enacted” legislation and SLD revised legislation.

The UK Parliament website provides information on the legislative process in the UK and on current parliamentary activities including information on Bills that are going through parliament. The Parliamentary Archives is a good source of information on where to find legislation not available on SLD.

CASE LAW

The British and Irish Legal Information Institute provides access to freely available British and Irish public legal information including case law.

EUROPEAN LAW

EUR-Lex provides access to European Union legislation and has useful links to other EU institutions.

LEGAL ADVICE & REPRESENTATION

The Citizens Advice Service in England and Wales helps people resolve their legal, money and other problems by providing free information and advice. There are also Citizens Advice Services for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Advicenow is an independent, not-for-profit website providing accurate, up-to-date information on rights and legal issues in England and Wales.

Community Legal Advice is a free and confidential service covering England and Wales, paid for by legal aid.

Law Centres provide an independent legal advice and representation service across the UK. They employ specialists in areas of ‘social welfare’ law and help individuals and local groups with problems.

The Law Society represents solicitors in England and Wales and provides information on Finding a Solicitor.

The Solicitors Regulation Authority regulates solicitors in England and Wales.

The Legal Complaints Service investigates complaints about solicitors in England and Wales.

The Law Society of Scotland represents and regulates solicitors in Scotland and can help you find a solicitor in Scotland.

The Law Society of Northern Ireland represents and regulates solicitors in Northern Ireland and can help you find a solicitor in Northern Ireland.

Trading Standards provides consumer protection information in the UK.
